DFA: Malaysian PM, PNoy to discuss defense, security cooperation

Defense and security cooperation will be among the matters President Benigno Aquino III and Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak will discuss when they meet in MalacaƱang on Monday morning.

The Department of Foreign Affairs on Saturday evening said the two leaders will meet before the signing of a framework agreement between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in the afternoon.

"(P)rime Minister Najib will have a bilateral meeting with President Aquino in the morning of October 15 to discuss the political, economic and defense and security cooperation between the Philippines and Malaysia," the DFA said in a news release posted on its website late Saturday.

Earlier, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the Malaysian leader is to arrive on Sunday.

It will be the the Prime Minister's first visit to the Philippines since he assumed office in 2009.

Accompanying him will be his spouse, Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor, and the Malaysian ministers of foreign affairs, defense and international trade and industry.

Also accompanying him is a Malaysian business delegation headed by AlloyMTD Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dato Azmil Khalid, the pro-tempore chair of the Kuala Lumpur based Malaysia-Philippines Business Council.

Malaysia served as the third-party Facilitator of the government-MILF peace talks since 2001, and the head of the International Monitoring Team since 2004.

Also on Monday, Aquino will host a luncheon in honor of Najib and Datin Rosmah Mansor.

Meanwhile, Najib will meet leading Philippine CEOs under the auspices of the Philippines-Malaysia Business Council.

Datin Rosmah, an alumna of the Asian Institute of Management (AIM), will also visit and deliver a speech at her alma mater in the afternoon of October 15.-GMA News (October 14, 2012 10:46AM)
