Philippine Customs heads Asean trade body
MANILA, Philippines - The Bureau of Customs has been chosen to head the Asean Single Window (ASW) Steering Committee, which will formulate and implement rules promoting trade facilitation within the region.
In a statement, the Department of Finance said representatives from the Asean have elected Bureau of Customs Deputy Commissioner Ma. Caridad Manarang as the new ASW Steering Committee chair.
Besides the Philippines, two other countries were considered to head the said committee. Brunei begged off, while Malaysia said that it will go along with the choice of the majority.
Among the committee's roles is to formulate and implement rules and procedures for trade facilitation among Asean member-countries.
The Philippines' local version of the system - the National Single Window (NSW) - was introduced during the Arroyo administration.
The NSW allows traders to submit import documents to a single location or entity.-Interaksyon (May 20, 2012)
