Vietnam opposes Taiwan drills in Spratly Islands

Vietnam's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Luong Thanh Nghi opposed yesterday Taiwan's plan to conduct a live-ammunition drill on Ba Binh island in Vietnam's Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago, saying that the act seriously violated Vietnam's sovereignty.

Nghi made the statement at a regular press briefing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs while answering reporters' questions on Vietnam's reaction to Taiwan's announcement on Monday of a drill in September.

He said: "We protest Taiwan's plan. Taiwan's plan of a live-ammunition drill on Ba Binh island in Vietnam's Truong Sa archipelago seriously violates Vietnam's sovereignty, threatening peace, stability, security and maritime safety, causing tensions and complicating the situation in the East Sea.

"We request Taiwan immediately cancel this plan," he stressed.-Asian News Network
