New Zealand, Philippines to discuss initiative to expand trade

The New Zealand and Philippines foreign ministers will hold talks tomorrow on expanding bilateral trade and investment, the New Zealand government announced today.

New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully and visiting Philippines Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario would discuss a working holiday scheme between the two countries among other initiatives.

"The Philippines economy has shown strong growth this year. It is our 14th largest market and our fifth largest dairy market. There is wide scope for closer engagement in this and other sectors such as tourism, aviation and the geothermal industry," McCully said in a statement.

The information and communication technologies sector was also important, with two New Zealand-based firms, Datacom and Telecom, having operations in the Philippines.

"There is significant potential for increased bilateral trade in ICT and other commercial services, as well as two-way investment," McCully said.

Del Rosario would also meet Trade Minister Tim Groser while in New Zealand.-The Philippine Star (August 21, 2012 10:01PM)
