Indonesia, Australia agree to boost maritime ties

An Australian official says his country and Indonesia will boost maritime cooperation as boat accidents carrying asylum seekers are increasing.

Transport minister Anthony Albanese told a news conference Tuesday that Australian aircraft will be allowed to enter Indonesia's airspace and refuel during searches and rescues.

He said Australia also has agreed to improve Indonesia's search-and-rescue capabilities by providing advanced satellite communication and tracking technology to seek help from merchant ships.

Albanese and two other Australian ministers are in Indonesia to discuss with their Indonesian counterparts ways to strengthen maritime ties and combat people smuggling.

Indonesia is a transit point on the hazardous sea journey to Australia. Accidents have increased as more ships enter the seas ahead of a new immigration policy taking effect in Australia.-The Jakarta Post (September 04, 2012 9:45PM)
