Animal abusers in S'pore may soon face stiffer punishment

Animal abuse - whether by individuals or industry players - may soon see the perpetrators face stiffer penalties in Singapore.

This may come in the form of longer jail terms and higher fines as well as community work with animal welfare groups.

Members of the Animal Welfare Legislation Review Committee (AWLRC), said these are just some of the measures that could come to pass if the committee's recommendations are accepted in parliament.

The committee was set up this year to review existing animal welfare legislation. It expects to finalise its recommendations by the end of this month, said MP Yeo Guat Kwang, the committee's chairman.

They will thereafter be submitted to the Ministry of National Development for consideration.

This comes after a month electronic consultation to seek views from the public ended on October 5.

Yeo was speaking to The Sunday Times on the sidelines of the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority Responsible Pet Ownership roadshow at the Singapore Expo yesterday.

Minister of State for National Development Tan Chuan-Jin said at the event that strengthening existing animal welfare legislation was both "timely" and "overdue", but that this had to be done while "balancing the diverse interests of the community at large".-Asia News Network (November 11, 2012)
